A Day at the Races

This year’s annual Royal Sussex Stakes race was run on the 5 September 2023. The day was gloriously hot and over 150 members attended. Twenty two members and partners paid to be in the Association box which overlooked the finishing line. Our historical links with Goodwood go back to 1800 when the third Duke of Richmond, who was Colonel of The Royal Sussex Light Infantry Militia, used what is today’s racecourse to train the officers in horse-riding which developed into a race meeting. The link with the Regiment was enhanced in July 1965 when the Regimental Association presented a challenge bowl for a race to be known as ‘The Royal Sussex Regiment Stakes’. The annual race perpetuates the name of the Regiment and its close association with Goodwood. This year’s race was won by No. 2 Novel Legend, owned by Mr Boniface Ho Ka Kui, and the bowl was presented to him by the President and his wife.
