Memorial Garden Update

by | Jul 26, 2024 | News

The following is a situation and condition report on the Regimental Memorial Garden at Herstmonceux Castle. Alan Bernhem-Parter and Derek Cater visited recently to inspect and decide what remedial action was required, if any, and to determine Bader College’s policy regarding access. The garden is in pretty good condition given the length of time that we have not had access. The orange lilies are in full bloom and draw the eye to the site. Fiona, the lady gardener from the Herstmonceux garden staff, must be thanked for keeping a watching brief on the garden during our absence. The stems of grass growing through are deliberate as they provide different heights and context. (Think Alan Titchmarsh!) The wooden name plaque on the front needs to be temporarily removed for a light sanding and re-varnishing, however all the individual memorial plaques are in good condition. Ms. Jennifer Medves, retiring CEO, has returned for an interim period, and advises us that access to the garden for our Remembrance Service is assured. Details will be forthcoming nearer November. Tours of parts of the castle and grounds are being allowed but under strict controls and there is a charge. All tours are timed and escorted by castle staff. Alan has authority to access our Memorial Garden, with others, to carry out the remedial work and ongoing maintenance. Prior notification for this is required along with names of attendees, date and approximate time. If anyone has a valid reason for wishing to visit then please contact Alan Bernhem-Parter on 01323 729618 or by email at
